What is a Legal-Nurse Consultant?
A Legal Nurse Consultant is a Registered Nurse (or Nurse Practitioner) who is an expert in one or more specialties in their medical field. They use their expertise and experience as a healthcare professional to interpret and give an expert opinion on standard of care in health law cases. A Legal Nurse Consultant can provide valuable expert service to police investigations and attorneys in a variety of specialties. They can assist with interpreting medical records; explaining medical terminology, equipment and procedures; and assist with clarifying the healthcare issues of a legal case.
Legal Nurse Consultants provide services to a variety of professionals such as law firms, police investigations, government agencies, insurance companies, patient safety organizations, business and industry legal departments, healthcare facilities and forensic laboratories.
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are Master's prepared Registered Nurses who have additional education, training and experience in clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment. NPs practice at a simliar scope to a General Practitioner (GP or 'Family Doctor') and can independently prescribe medications, refer to specialists and order diagnostic tests. NPs are not supervised by physicians but collaborate with the entire medical team as an independent practitioner. NPs practice in a variety of setting including as primary care providers, in speciality clinics and in acute care environments.
